Aliens: Fireteam looks like some good co-op shooty time in new gameplay footage.

It was never really a challenge to imagine what game Aliens: Fireteam is since the moment of its reveal. The trailer showed third-person co-op action where a squad of players fend off waves of Xenomorphs.

This is exactly what this extended gameplay demo from IGN shows, and so much more. For one, the 25-minute gameplay demo illustrates the pace of the game, and the few ideas it borrows from other genre hits. The third-person movement and feel look to be similar to World War Z, as do the in-level pick-ups like turrets and other defences.

Fireteam also relies on a class system where players are encouraged to fill any one of five particular roles for their team. Another aspect that shows off really well in the gameplay is enemy variety. Developer Cold Iron says there are over 20 enemy types to fight, including different classes of Xenomorphs such as drones, Praetorians, Jumpers, Spitters, and Bursters – as well as androids and non-Xenomorphs (though we don’t see those today).

Cold Iron also said that the environment shown will be one of several, so we won’t just be fighting in the same ship interior for the entire game. Aliens: Fireteam’s story is made up of four campaigns, each set in one location, once again similar to World War Z

Though the game can be played solo, with bots filling in for the other two players, Cold Iron said it’s designed for co-op. In terms of difficulty, the developer explained that the game offers multiple levels that range from the casual and low-stakes to the challenging, with scarce ammo and friendly fire enabled.

Aliens: Fireteam is coming this summer to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
